A national programme that invests in local projects that tackle the root causes of poverty and promote social inclusion.
Building Better Opportunities is jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund Groundwork South is happy to support delivery of Building Better Opportunities Projects in Thames Valley Berkshire and Plymouth in Devon.
These schemes see the Big Lottery Fund match funds from the European Social Fund to remove barriers to employment for families with complex needs (TVB), and help young people into work (PD). By working in diverse partnerships together we enable people to learn and engage with their community on a pathway to employment.
Building Family Bridges Project in Thames Valley Berkshire
This partnership is led by the Workers’ Educational Association and has received £1.1 million of funding from the Building Better Opportunities programme, a key part of Thames Valley Berkshire European Funding Programme.
This fully funded programme (subject to eligibility) supports families, giving them the skills and confidence they need to move forward. We work on a one to one basis to help them address the challenges and barriers they are facing, and develop a personalised plan to help them achieve their goals and aspirations at their own pace.
We understand that there are many different factors which affect whether people are ready to take the next steps, our team will support and mentor families in a number of areas including gaining confidence, education, health and wellbeing, accessing funding to support people back in to education and employment.

Empowering Enterprise in Plymouth Devon
This is a unique Project for 18-24 year olds, who are not in education, employment or training. PETROC’s partnership will be used to engage 600 of Devon’s most socially excluded young people, and Groundwork South is proud to help deliver it.
Fully funded (subject to eligibility) this programme supports a young persons journey to work, by helping to develop employability skills and confidence as they focus on life goals, and receiving the training needed to reach them.
Working closely with the Project’s partners, will provide a joined-up approach, sharing best practice and access to training resources. Our Achievement Coaches will maintain relationships with those young people, for the time it takes for them to progress.
