Iver Environment Centre – Colne Valley

Iver Environment Centre is a 4.5 acre oasis located in the Colne Valley between Uxbridge and Slough. The centre is managed by Groundwork South to carry out environmental education, volunteering and family activities.

Volunteers will carry out a range of tasks to help maintain and improve the Environment Centre that’s used by local school children and gardening clubs.

Lower Clapton Road Community Garden

Groundwork London are working with Lower Clapton Road Surgery in Hackney to build a community garden.

Accessible to the local community, the surgery garden will become a welcome community green space.

Burgess Park

Burgess Park is one of London’s most important green spaces. It is one of the only major areas in London that has been reclaimed, post-war, as green space. It provides unique and essential facilities to a number of people and communities living in the vicinity. For many, this is the only accessible, local, quality green space. Groundwork London has been involved with Burgess Park for many years. With Avison Young’s help, we will provide essential maintenance and improvement tasks, benefitting both community access and biodiversity.

Lisson Grove

Lisson Grove Estate is a relatively deprived estate nestled cheek by Jowell with some of the richest properties in the country. For many years, Lisson Grove had a poor reputation and was blacklisted by police but it is now a place that is improving. Groundwork has worked alongside Westminster Council, local housing providers and other stakeholders for many years to help improve the quality of the shared spaces and access to local services (literally on the doorstep of Groundwork’s Westminster Wheels project on Church Street). The housing is densely packed and therefore the public spaces in between them need constant maintenance and improvement.

Volunteers will  be planting, watering, laying bark mulch and carrying out pruning and general tidy up across the Lisson Grove estate.

The Good Store

The Good Store is a shared journey that explores what sustainability means on the high street.
The Good Store offers the high street something new, where the search for conscious choices doesn’t lie with the customer.
Their commitment is to inspire and help develop the market for more sustainable products to come forward, working with charities and social enterprises, start-ups and established businesses to uncover more and better options. The Good Store focus’s on sustainability through reuse and repurpose, reduction of waste, and stocks items such as bags made from broken bouncy castles, and ex London fire brigade hoses, as well as many refillable products.

Wormwood Scrubs

Date: September 29th 2022

Location: Wormwood Scrubs, Du Cane Road, Hammersmith and Fulham, W12 0DF

Number of volunteer places: 50

At 76.8 hectares, Wormwood Scrubs is the borough’s largest open space.

The eastern half is a huge expanse of grass big enough for sports pitches and space to fly kites, run about and picnic. The western side is more overgrown. Areas of woodland, scrub and meadows with grass paths and nature trails give an opportunity to explore and see nature up close.

The ‘Scrubs’ has about 18 hectares of tree cover and 22 hectares of long grass meadow with almost 100 species of birds, the scrub areas provide the perfect nesting habitat. There are also 250 species of wildflowers (one sixth of the UK flora), many species of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians that make Wormwood Scrubs their home, and over 20 species of butterfly.

Volunteers will carry out extensive grassland and bramble management at this biodiversity rich West London open space.

Cannizaro Park

Cannizaro Park is a much loved and popular Grade II listed park just off Westside Wimbledon Common in the London Borough of Merton. The park has a long history dating back to its years as part of the Duke of Cannizaro’s Estate and its transition to a public Park when Merton Borough Council adopted it in 1949.

Its Grade II status is due to some of the rare and exquisite plants which are all around the park. It has some superb trees and shrubs, which are attractive to both the horticulturalists and gardeners as well as those who come for a walk a picnic or simply to enjoy some peace and quiet in the many secluded areas of the park. Groundwork will be working in support of the Friends of Cannizaro Park, alongside Merton Borough Council and grounds maintenance contractors.

Tasks will include general improvements and maintenance in this majestic South London park.

Perivale Wood

Perivale Wood is an 11.6 hectare local nature reserve and site of metropolitan importance for nature conservation in Perivale in the London Borough of Ealing. It is one of the oldest nature reserves in Britain. The Selborne Society has managed it since 1902. The site is mainly old oak woodland with areas of pasture and damp scrub, three ponds and two streams. The site is rich in biodiversity. The site is utilised by local schools and uniformed groups for nature education and ‘access to nature’ work for children in London. Groundwork has supported Perivale for many years. Arrive on Sunley Gardens for a magical day keeping this lovely site in great condition for its users.

Volunteers will carry out a range of habitat management tasks across the reserve including scrub clearance and coppicing.

Harmondsworth Moor

Harmondsworth Moor forms part of a network of interconnected spaces that make up the Colne Valley Regional Park- a park that has been managed by Groundwork for over 30 years. The open parkland contains a variety of habits including meadows, rivers, lakes and ponds. Meandering paths take you through open countryside and new plantations.

Volunteers will carry out conservation work and scrub clearance across the Moor.

Ockwells Park

Volunteers will provide tree care support to the recently planted woodland at Ockwells Park in Maidenhead. The Park, formerly part of the Ockwells Manor Estate, is now open for community use and includes a variety of landscapes for recreation and biodiversity. Groundwork works closely with the local authority and has planted hundreds of trees to create a new forest, helping to provide a green bridge for wildlife in Windsor and Maidenhead. You will helping to ensure that the park remains in great condition and that the trees planted survive the winter (and deer!).

Meanwhile Garden

Meanwhile Gardens aims to enhance the lives of residents in North Kensington and North Westminster by providing safe and inclusive open air leisure, play, training, and education opportunities in their four acre community park.

Whilst Meanwhile Gardens started out as a temporary community project back in 1976, the organisation is now firmly established as a much loved, local community green space. The Gardens saw a huge increase in visitors during the lockdown periods with many local people utilising the Gardens for their daily physical exercise, and expressed high gratitude of the greenspace and their ability to connect to nature in an inner city environment.

Volunteers will carry out a range of tasks to help establish this temporary garden.

White City Estate, Shepherds Bush

Groundwork London works with local residents to help plant trees and shrubs to improve the White City Estate. The long-term goals are to improve air quality and promote biodiversity, while giving residents the chance to get to know each other, working with local residents to install green infrastructure – such as anti-flooding drainage schemes and green roofs.

In addition, Groundwork have set up a dedicated maintenance and horticulture training programme for residents looking to learn new skills called the ‘Green Team’.

Volunteers are needed to carry out general maintenance, and the planting of bulbs across the estate.

Queen Caroline Estate

The project helps to reduce deprived communities’ vulnerability to climate change by offering targeted assistance to social housing sites.

Queen Caroline Estate has an open structure with fairly large areas of open space between the residential blocks. Groundwork works with the Queen Caroline Estate to improve the local greenspaces, and have already implemented biodiverse green roofs, rain gardens planted with wildflower, and food growing beds for residents.

Landscape improvements provide an opportunity to engage residents in their open space, providing practical benefits in terms of site maintenance and wider community benefits in terms of health and well-being, and increased resident interaction.

Volunteers will carry out general maintenance, planting and replanting of a green wall.
