Silverdale Country Park

Location: Newcastle under Lyme, ST7 8BS

Number of volunteer places: 60

This country park provides an open greenspace for local people to use recreationally, and for sport and environmental monitoring. The site boasts a site of biological importance, as well as a diverse mosaic of different habitats, including wetlands, meadows, ground nesting bird breeding grounds, bare ground areas of invertebrate importance, hedgerows, woodlands and 8 miles of footpaths. All of this requires ongoing maintenance, and new habitat aspirations require considerable input from volunteers.

Volunteers could get involved in a range of activities, from practical conservation and habitat management, to hard landscaping, park maintenance and physical activities or traditional rural skills.

Telford Millennium Nature Reserve

Location: Telford, TF2 6SD

COACH TRAVEL WILL BE ARRANGED FROM THE BIRMINGHAM OFFICE FOR THIS EVENT.

Register today to join 45 Avison Young Volunteers on 6 October at Telford Millennium Nature Reserve – a beautiful reserve thriving with nature and biodiversity.

Home to a variety of habitats including woodland, heathland, meadow and grassland, as well as housing UK Biodiversity Action Plan, the reserve sits just north of Telford providing access to greenspace, environmental learning and a place to appreciate nature to all members of the local community.

Volunteers will get involved in a range of activities consisting of practical conservation activities designed to maintain the area and increase the biodiversity of the site. This will also include activities such as step building, creating seating, maintaining and preserving walkways, seeding and litter picks.

Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve

Location: Bilston, WV14 0EF

Register today to join 30 Avison Young Volunteers on 6 October at Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve – a wonderful reserve increasing biodiversity and links to green spaces for the local area.

Bilston Urban Village is a flagship development for Wolverhampton and the wider Black Country, showcasing the area’s ability to deliver mixed-use and sustainable housing development alongside the creation and management of high quality green spaces. The aims of the project were to rehabilitate 14ha of brownfield land, improving the biodiversity and creating a network of linked biodiverse and multifunctional greenspaces within the development for the local community.

Volunteers will get involved in a range of tasks for the day consisting of activities such as litter picking the reserve and immediate location, light tree/vegetation pruning, preparing our new education activity space ready for engagement with children’s groups, bulb planting and other outdoor activities.

Saltwells Nature Reserve

Location: Dudley, DY5 1AX

Register today to join 45 Avison Young Volunteers on 6 October at Saltwells Nature Reserve – one of the UK’s largest nature reserves.

Saltwells National Nature Reserve is a mixture of world-class geology, bluebell covered Ancient Woodland and nationally important heritage. It is one of the UK’s largest urban nature reserves and very proud to be at the heart of the Global Black Country GeoPark. We rely heavily on community support to maintain and improve this important site.

Volunteers will be helping to increase grassland biodiversity and protect the nationally important geological importance. A variety of tasks will be available including, some work on scrub removal with loppers and cleaning geological features.

Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens

Location: Castle Bromwich, B36 9BT

Register today to join nearly 30 Avison Young Volunteers on 6 October at Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens – a unique 18th century garden.

Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens is 10 acres of a unique survival of 350year-old early 18th century formal garden design. The Grade II* walled garden, once part of the Earl of Bradford’s estate, is now rescued, nurtured and owned by an independent Charitable Trust. Keeping largely to a period relevant style with plant species and heritage fruit from 1680-1760 it’s like visiting the baroque countryside in the middle of a 21st century city.

Volunteers can expect to get involved with the Parkland, doing conservation clearing, e.g. cutting back brambles, moving logs, brush clearance. There will also be an opportunity for a group to work inside the historic walls mainly cutting back holly in the holly maze.
