Collecting rainwater with a water butt is a great way to save water, reduce your bills, and help the environment. With a few simple steps, you can keep your water butt safe and your garden thriving.

Here are our tips for safe use and reduced exposure to Legionella bacteria:

Keep it clean – Give it a good clean every few months (or at least once a year). Use gloves and a face mask to help keep you safe while cleaning.

Cover up – Use a tight-fitting lid and a mesh filter to stop leaves, insects, and debris from getting in.

Stay cool – Keep your water butt in the shade if possible. Cooler water helps reduce bacteria growth.

Check your gutters – Clean them regularly to stop leaves and dirt building up.

Use watering cans – They’re safer and more water-efficient than spray hoses, which can create mists you might breathe in.

Mind the temperature – If water is above 20°C, let it cool before using it on your plants.

Supervise children – Always keep little ones safe around stored water.

Make sure you avoid these mistakes:
  • Leaving the water butt uncovered
  • Letting algae or dirt build up inside.
  • Using hoses or water butts that sit in full sun.
  • Creating fine water sprays you might inhale.
  • Make sure you wash your hands after use.

Water butt water should not be used for drinking, bathing, or indoor cleaning.
