Ellenbrook Play

LOCATION: Hatfield, Hertfordshire
CLIENT: Hatfield Town Council
INVOLVEMENT: Consultation, design and contract management

Context and brief

Ellenbrook was an open green space with limited play equipment for smaller children. There were no provisions for older children or accompanying families. So Hatfield Town Council approached Groundwork to undertake a consultation with the local community, and there was an active Friends Group who were keen to be involved.

Design statement & Process

Groundwork held a large consultation on the site to gain the views of the local community and received the views from residents of all ages. It was clear that equipment for all age groups was required, and places for the whole community to improve their health and wellbeing.

Following the consultation, Groundwork developed a design that incorporated the adjacent replica train line, with the park gaining a train shaped play frame. There is also a new path in the style of a train track that leads to the new gate. A new zip line, swings, goal posts, and a basketball hoop to cater for older children.

Groundwork managed the contractors to implement this exciting new play area. One which not only met the needs of the local community, but that also gave them a space they felt proud of and that reflected their local area.
