Wellies in the Woods: Justina’s Story
Justina has attended Wellies in the Woods sessions for three years with her daughter. As home educator, she sees the sessions as the perfect way for herself and her child to meet new people in the magic of nature.
Justina says:
“I first heard about the project on Facebook. I wanted to get my daughter involved in more outdoor activities in nature and thought this would be a good opportunity. The sessions are close to where we live, so we can get here easily. We regularly walk in woods as a family so we know the area well.
“I like that that sessions were both focused on nature and books. It gets my daughter engaged in both activities in a way that keeps her interested – and not just sitting and listening. She loves books and going on bug hunts and making bug houses.
“My daughter has always loved being outdoors. She’s quite adventurous! These sessions have given her the opportunity to speak to more people, especially after Covid when no one was interacting. I’ve also been able to have more conversations and there is always a parent to talk to.
“I think initiatives like these are important for children, parents and families. Wellies in the Woods gets people together in their local area and allows kids to learn about their environment without thinking they are learning. It removes fear around bugs, being dirty and children see other children getting involved, encouraging use of their imagination.

I’d tell anyone thinking of attending a session to definitely try it. It won’t cost you anything and it gives your child a lot – and a lot of fun!
