Megan and her husband attend Wellies in the Woods sessions with their two daughters. As teachers, they are keen to reap the benefits of learning through play.

Megan says:

“I first heard about Wellies in the Woods through a family friend. I liked that the sessions were both about reading and outdoors so decided to give it a go.

“My eldest daughter is starting school in September so Wellies in the Woods is helping her to get ready for this. She loves being outdoors so it’s a great hook for her all while enjoying the sessions, having fun and engaging with others.

“We come to the sessions as a family – my husband and I are teachers so it’s great in the holidays and we can all attend together and my youngest daughter can get involved too.

“It’s a great way for my eldest daughter to meet new people as that’s something she does find quite difficult. She was really quiet on the first session but now she talks to Hannah [Groundwork’s Team Manager who facilitates the sessions] and others – we wouldn’t have had that before. We’ve definitely seen a positive change in confidence, which is really important for us, especially with her about to start school.

“We have been involved in bug hunts and nature arts and crafts – exploring the environment and having others here to do it with is lovely. The books are a great way to get the children engaged. My eldest daughter enjoys Room on the Broom and my youngest loves the Gruffalo!

“I think projects like this are so important for all children and their families. As a teacher, I’m an advocate for getting outside and learning through play. Informal learning is so important for all children, no matter their age.

The Wellies in the Woods sessions are so welcoming and lovely. It’s a real testament to Hannah that my daughter has grown in confidence. I’d definitely tell all parents to go along and see what it’s all about!

About Wellies in the Woods

Groundwork’s Wellies in the Woods brings outdoor play and learning to young children and their families in deprived communities across the UK.

Through storybook-inspired sessions in local parks, woods and outdoor spaces, the programme helps children to build their confidence, improve early development and form a lasting connection and appreciation with nature, alongside improving literacy skills and encouraging reading.

By bringing beloved storybooks to life in the great outdoors, Wellies in the Woods creates a safe space where families can connect, learn, and grow together in learning sessions designed to inspire, educate, and empower.
