• Norway maple was introduced to the UK in the 17th century. It is planted as an ornamental tree in  streets, parks and gardens due to its tall trunk and tolerance of compacted soils, shade and pollution.
  • Moth caterpillars feed on the leaves, the flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees and other insects, the seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals, and grey squirrels strip the bark.
  • It is thought that the wood was used by the Italian violin makers Stradivari and Guarneri.
