STATEMENT: Groundwork response to the energy price cap rise

In response to the latest rise in the energy price cap, Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s UK Chief Executive, said:

“As COP26 President, the UK Government has said it will lead by example in tackling the climate and nature crisis.  A key part of this is to ensure a ‘just transition’ to a low carbon future, a path to net zero that ensures those who contribute least to the problem don’t pay the highest price as we try to fix it.  This is not how it’s working out.”

“We need to do much more to shield those who are most vulnerable from the rise in global energy prices while going much faster to change our energy mix and ensure our homes, workplaces and community buildings are fit for an energy-efficient future.  Ensuring people have the support, advice and income to meet their immediate energy needs is vital if we’re going to stave off widespread hardship, and investing in the skills and infrastructure we need in the longer term will create the green jobs we need for a more resilient and sustainable economy.”
