Wellies in the Woods: Vicky’s Story
Though she enjoyed gardening as a child, when Vicky developed hay fever she lost her joy of the outdoors and became wary of insects. Despite her initial reluctance, Wellies in the Woods offered her the opportunity to get back outdoors with her daughter, Kylah.
Vicky says:
“Wellies in the Woods was such a lovely and fun experience. We loved the arts and crafts, particularly making crowns, finding hidden pictures and going on a bug hunt! Wellies taught me that bugs aren’t as scary as I’d thought.
“Kylah and I bonded more through these sessions, and it gave our family the chance to all get involved. One week her dad came and then Kylah’s older sister.
“We now spend much more time together and do regular crafting at home. Wellies has made us a family again.
“There has been a difference in our lives; we’re more observant and engaged with wildlife. We talk a lot about nature and I’m learning too!”

Next summer I’m hoping to go camping with the kids which is something I never would have considered before!
About Wellies in the Woods
Groundwork’s Wellies in the Woods brings outdoor play and learning to young children and their families in deprived communities across the UK.
Through storybook-inspired sessions in local parks, woods and outdoor spaces, the programme helps children to build their confidence, improve early development and form a lasting connection and appreciation with nature, alongside improving literacy skills and encouraging reading.
By bringing beloved storybooks to life in the great outdoors, Wellies in the Woods creates a safe space where families can connect, learn, and grow together in learning sessions designed to inspire, educate, and empower.
