There are two ways that you can get involved in the amazing work we do here at Groundwork to make an impact in your local community.

You can apply to volunteer at one of our breathe-easy schools projects funded by Balfour Beatty and your employee fundraising, or you can enquire about a team volunteering day at one of our many Groundwork projects nationally. You can find more detail on each of these below.

Breathe-easy Schools

Schools are depending on their outdoor areas more than ever before as they continue to deal with the pandemic to provide outdoor learning and education to children. But many schools are located near busy main roads with no barrier, opening them up to air pollution that can cause lasting effects on the children that go there.

That’s why Balfour Beatty are working with Groundwork and raising funds to create natural pollution barriers in primary schools in the areas where employees live and work.

We currently have three breathe-easy school projects waiting for work to be carried out and we need your help. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers across the locations of Manchester, Leeds and Edinburgh to get hands on and bring these projects to life in local primary school grounds – we’ll need your help in a range of activities to plant green barriers around schools and install new species to increase biodiversity and help these schools become more resilient to pollution in the air.

We have limited volunteering spaces so register today using the links below to secure your place and let’s make a lasting impact together.

Team Employee Volunteering

Groundwork also offer team volunteering days across our varied range of other projects nationally. If you are looking to come out and volunteer with your team for the day, we would love to have your support. We can plan this activity for a date that suits you and your team.

We do charge for team volunteering days to cover our costs of staff time, resourcing and materials. Costs vary depending on the project and location but start at £55 + VAT per person or a minimum cost of £1500 + VAT per event in London or the South East. We generally require a minimum number of 15 volunteers at our projects.

You can find out more about our team volunteering offer in our Employee Volunteering Brochure.

Volunteering FAQ’s

Will Risk Assessments of the sites and the volunteer work be undertaken by Groundwork?

Yes, Groundwork will carry out a thorough risk assessment of the school grounds and volunteering activities prior to any employee volunteering. Groundwork staff will provide volunteers with a safety briefing before any works begin.

Is insurance for employee volunteering covered by Groundwork?

Yes, Groundwork hold public liability insurance for volunteering activity at our project sites and are able to provide documentation in advance.

What clothing should volunteers wear on the day?

Volunteers will need to wear practical clothing for physical volunteering activities. Groundwork will provide volunteers with a full ‘about your day’ briefing which will cover any clothing recommendations or requirements. Groundwork will also supply full PPE on the day of volunteering.

Will food and refreshments be provided on the day?

Food is not usually provided on volunteering days unless arranged separately in advance, but this is not always possible. We usually ask volunteers to bring a packed lunch with them on the day of volunteering and we try to provide refreshments. This will be covered in your ‘about your day’ briefing that you will receive in advance of your day of volunteering.
