New to Nature was an ambitious programme that created life-changing opportunities for young people from underrepresented backgrounds while helping to make the environmental sector more inclusive, diverse and future-ready.

The results

  • 66% secured jobs after their placement, with most staying in the nature sector
  • 100% gained new skills and experiences valuable for their future careers
  • 88% feel confident about finding work in their chosen field
  • Host organisations also reported benefits, with 92% improving their diversity and inclusion practices and many committing to lasting change

Beyond employment, Trainees reported improved wellbeing, confidence, and a sense of belonging in a sector they once felt excluded from. Host organisations gained new capacity, fresh perspectives, and the tools to recruit more inclusively.

The programme has left a strong legacy of empowered young professionals, more inclusive organisations, and a growing recognition that green jobs must be accessible to everyone.

New to Nature demonstrated how investing in diversity isn’t just fair – it’s essential for building a resilient workforce to protect our environment for future generations.

  • 80% made changes to their internal practices based on their New to Nature experience
  • Many organisations also joined or improved their Disability Confident status, showing a commitment to inclusive recruitment

Host Organisations reported that the biggest positive impact came from rethinking their recruitment and interview processes. Job descriptions were simplified to remove unnecessary barriers, and interview questions were shared in advance – allowing candidates to prepare and showcase their true potential.

Having a full-time trainee for a year was an incredible opportunity for Scotswood Garden. The placement was extended, and we were able to employ and retain our trainee, even promoting them despite reducing hours due to funding constraints.

By reimagining how green jobs are created and filled, organisations are helping to build a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable workforce for the future. 87% report improved life satisfaction by the end of the placement, valued at over £1 million in aggregate wellbeing improvements.
