Duration: End of March 2027

Background

The Greater Manchester Nature Network Grant is designed to support progress towards the ambitions of the GM Local Nature Recovery Strategy, by giving small grants to charitable and third sector organisations to create more wildlife-rich land with the GM Nature Network.

What Groundwork are doing

Harphurhey Ponds & Woodlands

We will elevate over 5 ha of woodland and pond habitats in Harphurhey toward “Good” condition. Working with partners and local volunteers we will clear debris and invasive species, thin non-native canopies, and restock with native trees. Simultaneously, we will connect the local community to nature through practical, hands-on volunteering sessions, building deep local ownership and a skilled grassroots network to secure long-term maintenance along this vital River Irk wildlife corridor.

Birchcroft Community Garden

We will transform a currently disused area to the rear of our office in Ashton into a wildlife-rich community garden, creating new habitats that support biodiversity while providing an accessible space for people to connect with nature. We will design and install native wildflower planting, trees and shrubs, wildlife-friendly features and natural habitats for pollinators, birds and small mammals. Groundwork employees, 16-25 year old learners and local community groups will help develop the space and benefit from its transformation.
