Background

Working with the Irwell Catchment Partnership, this project will revitalise the urbanised watercourse spanning Horwich and Lostock to improve local biodiversity and river health.

What Groundwork are doing

Our work will include:

  • Habitat Improvement: Enhancing environments for Water Voles, Great Crested Newts, and Kingfishers.
  • Community Engagement: Training local volunteers as ‘River Guides’ and ‘Young River Guardians’ to provide ongoing stewardship.
  • Water Quality: Improved through addressing urban pollution, naturalising the river, restoring habitats and managing invasive non-native species (INNS).
