Dillon’s Story
Despite periods of homelessness and ongoing challenges with anxiety, 23-year-old Dillon from Middleton has remained committed to finding work.
Like many people across the UK, Dillon was regularly applying for roles but struggling to secure employment, a situation that was affecting his confidence and increasing his anxiety.
That’s when Middleton Job Centre recommended support from Groundwork.
Groundwork is currently delivering Individual Placement and Support (IPS) to people with health conditions across Tameside, Rochdale and Oldham, recognising the positive impact that meaningful work can have on health and wellbeing.
Dillon was initially connected with Groundwork employment coach Lee. However, after their first meeting, Lee learned of Dillon’s strong interest in working within security and felt that his colleague Debasish, who has extensive experience in the security industry, would be better placed to support him.
With his years of experience and strong employer connections in the sector, Debasish was an ideal advisor and mentor for Dillon.
Alongside CV development, one-to-one coaching and interview preparation, Debasish was also able to identify suitable paid opportunities through his network.
Recognising that Dillon would be more comfortable working in a single, fixed location rather than moving between multiple event venues, Debasish contacted Michael Inch, Head of Security at Bridgewater Hall.
He explained that Dillon had no prior security experience but a strong motivation to work. As an established partner, Michael was willing to offer Dillon an opportunity on a trial basis, subject to Debasish providing initial on-site support.
Debasish supported Dillon during his first few shifts, recognising that he was initially shy and lacked confidence in his role. He provided guidance on customer service approach and offered constructive feedback to help build his confidence.
After a few shifts, Dillon was performing well in his new role and keen to increase his hours and gain further experience.
