“I recommend this programme for women looking to build skills, confidence, and community” – Jelena’s Story
Jelena, a qualified professional with a degree in Quality Management and a Level 2 Horticulture qualification, has always had a passion for hands-on work. She volunteered with SG Gang at Buile Hill Park, helping with gardening projects, and has experience as a Health & Safety representative and First Aider. Recently, she found herself not working and fully immersed in renovating her own home, a project that sparked her love for DIY even further. Alongside this, she was pursuing a Level 3 counselling course, balancing her academic goals with her practical ambitions.

Jelena first heard about Elevate Salford through a flyer for a womens property maintenance course. The idea of learning in a supportive, female-focused environment immediately appealed to her. She wanted not only to gain confidence in using tools and tackling home projects but also to deepen her understanding of skills like risk assessment and safe working practices.
Overcoming barriers
In the past, Jelena had faced challenges related to age and gender discrimination when applying for jobs, and she also manages back issues that make manual handling difficult. These factors had affected her confidence, employability, and finances. At Elevate, she found a relaxed and accommodating environment where she could learn at her own pace, receive clear guidance, and connect with other women sharing similar goals.

Gaining new skills
By the end of the programme, Jelena had achieved much more than she anticipated. She gained practical DIY and property maintenance skills, strengthened her confidence, and learned how to approach tasks safely. Perhaps most importantly, she formed friendships and connections that will support her future projects. Jelena describes her experience on the course as inspiring, empowering, and fun, and she wholeheartedly recommends the programme to other women looking to build skills, confidence, and community.
Through Elevate, Jelena has transformed her approach to DIY and practical work, equipping herself with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take on her own projects and future opportunities in a way she never thought possible.
