Laurel moved to Clayton Vale just a year ago and quickly fell in love with the landscape, wildlife and peace it offered. Regular walks with her dog helped her appreciate the space as a vital natural asset for local people, something she felt strongly should be protected for future generations.

A keen gardener, nature advocate and talented crafter, Laurel had previously delivered creative workshops in her former community. Keen to use her skills to give back in her new neighbourhood, she began looking for ways to get involved. Spotting a poster for our ‘Wild About Clayton Vale’ volunteering programme was the moment everything changed.

Getting Involved in Local Conservation

Keen to meet like‑minded people and support a place she cared about, Laurel joined a Himalayan balsam removal session over the summer. She loved the experience and soon became a regular volunteer.

Since then, she has taken part in a wide range of educational and practical activities, from learning about meadow habitats and moths to helping enhance and protect the Vale’s natural environment. Volunteering has allowed her to deepen her knowledge, build new skills and connect with residents who share her passion for nature.

“As a new resident, Groundwork Greater Manchester has been invaluable in helping me feel connected to my local green spaces and community. What started as a fun afternoon volunteering has helped me understand the importance of making green spaces accessible to all.”

Growing Into a Community Leader

Laurel’s involvement has opened up opportunities to shape the future of Clayton Vale. She is now a member of the Clayton Vale Green Community Hub Steering Group, helping guide improvements and championing accessible, welcoming green spaces for all.

She is also developing a creative project celebrating the Vale’s history and wildlife, combining her artistic skills with her commitment to community storytelling.

“It’s been amazing getting to know others who love Clayton Vale, and now I’m working on a project to highlight its history and wildlife. I can’t thank the team enough for the brilliant events they put on, my favourite was learning about moths, and for giving individuals a say in how to improve the areas they live in. I couldn’t recommend coming down to a session enough!”
