“I’m really happy with my current position” – Robert’s story
Robert first met Groundwork Employment Specialist Lee at his local library in Middleton whilst attending another group there. He noticed people speaking with Lee about work challenges and getting help with job searches but at the time Robert was employed so he didn’t think much more about it. However, that changed when Robert was told he was being made redundant from his job as a Kitchen Assistant.
When Robert was next at the library and he noticed Lee was free in between clients he decided to find out more about what Groundwork did and if Lee would be able to help him out. Lee explained the support he provided, and they arranged to meet the following week.
During their first meeting Lee chatted through some initial questions with Robert, covering his goals and aspiration and any concerns or barriers he felt were holding him back. Through their discussion, Robert identified he’d like to look for roles working in kitchens. By the time they met a week later, Lee had reviewed Robert’s CV and suggested several improvements. After Robert updated his CV, they began doing targeted job searches together.

It wasn’t long until Robert had secured an interview. To help prepare Robert for this, Lee would talk through any concerns Robert had and practise interview techniques. Although Robert didn’t get a job after his first interview, he remained in positive spirits as after each interview they would review how it went and discuss how Robert can improve for the next one.
In August Lee shared an opportunity at Rochdale Council for a casual catering position that suited Robert’s experience. Although Robert was looking for full time work, Lee encouraged Robert to apply nonetheless, ensuring he kept his options open. Robert applied and was accepted for interview and was delighted to be offered the job!
Only a few months into the role, Robert’s role changed from a casual position to a full-time job, which he was over the moon with:
“I’m really happy with my current position and all the help I’ve received off Lee and Groundwork.”
Lee continues to stay in touch with Robert, checking on his progress and offering support whenever needed. He added:
“Robert has been a pleasure to help and the change within him since he’s moved back into work has been amazing to see.”
