Nature Away Days
Help maintain and develop thriving habitats in Rochdale and Trafford on a Nature Away Day. Preserve and enhance spaces which are vital for native species and local people whilst enjoying a rewarding day outdoors, guided by experts who share their knowledge and passion for nature.
Community Action Days
Help strengthen local communities and create greener, more accessible spaces across Greater Manchester on a Community Action Day. Work alongside community volunteers to improve local green spaces, support projects that benefit people and nature, and enjoy a rewarding day of corporate volunteering with expert guidance throughout.

Nature Away Days
We manage over 22 hectres of green space in Rochdale and Trafford. However, as a charity, we receive little to no funding for the maintenance and improvement of these nature sites.
Our corporate partners help us create spaces where nature has the opportunity to thrive and which showcase the role of nature-based solutions in tackling the climate emergency. These same beautiful spaces provide opportunities to connect with nature, for learning and for play. By taking part in a Nature Away Day your team will be helping contribute to these goals, whilst also benefiting from them.
Nature Away Days run for a full day, with your team meeting on site at 9.45am and wrapping up just after 3.30pm. You’ll be supported by our expert team, who will ensure the day runs smoothly, provide supervision and share their own nature knowledge.

Our Nature Sites
Boarshaw Clough
Boarshaw Clough is a 6-hectare nature reserve in Middleton, Rochdale comprising of woodland, wetland and grassland habitats that support wildlife and provide daily access to nature for local communities.
Irkside
Irkside Nature Reserve is a small “wet woodland” located next to Alkrington woods, the site is a mature woodland with a circular path meandering through the trees and across the wetland areas. The path network is connected to other local public footpaths allowing for longer walks through the River Irk corridor and beyond.
Roch Valley
Roch Valley is an 8-hectare nature site nestled between Queen’s Park and Springfield Park in Heywood. Although small in size, the site is of biological importance as it is home to a hay meadow habitat which contains essential species including meadow saxifrage.
Trafford Ecology Park
Trafford Ecology Park is a 4.5-hectare beautiful & peaceful green space hidden in the industrial area of Trafford Park. There are a range of maintenance tasks to be completed throughout the year, including woodland management, meadow management and maintaining paths and access routes.
Community Action Days
We support community groups across Greater Manchester to create and develop their local green spaces so that everyone has fair and equal access to nature and all the benefits it brings.
Our Community Action Days bring together community volunteers and our corporate partners.
Community Action Days are arranged fully by the Groundwork team who make sure activities are coordinated with the community groups, materials and tools are arranged and that there is adequate supervision and refreshments for everyone involved.

Dates
As these events centre around community needs, the schedule is required to be slightly more flexible than other corporate volunteering activities. Typically, we request that organisations suggest three possible dates for a Community Action Day so that we can check availability.

Community Projects Requiring Support
Medlock Valley
We are working along the whole of the Medlock Valley from Oldham to Manchester City centre to improve habitats and accessibility for communities.
We’re looking for volunteers to help with woodland management, meadow creation, tree planting and litter clearances, including getting in the river to remove litter and debris.
Newbold Community Garden
We’re supporting the local community to transform a former tip site on an industrial estate in Rochdale into a vibrant community food growing space.
We’re looking for volunteers to help with pond planting, soil moving, raised bed repairs, weeding, planter preparation and composting.
West Gorton
The West Gorton Postcode Gardening team are working with residents to co-create and care for greenspaces local to them. They need volunteers to help:
- Plant trees, bulbs, perennials and wildflowers to improve biodiversity – attracting bees, butterflies and other insects
- Build bird boxes and bug hotels and create wildlife corridors
- Create and maintain spaces to grow fresh food for local people
- Green streets, alleyways and neglected spaces for community
The Groundwork team were incredible, full of knowledge and supported a novice but enthusiastic team to get stuck into woodland coppicing. We had a brilliant day, and really felt like we’d contributed to the upkeep of a vital ecological space in Salford!

This option is particularly favourable to those who do not wish to volunteer a full day at a time and/or wish to work remotely.
