CLAD Catalyst Award

Groundwork Greater Manchester is pleased to announce that we are the proud recipient of the CLAD Catalyst Award. The unique title, awarded by The Carbon Literacy Project, highlights our dedication to tackling climate change through climate education and action, and for catalysing the delivery of Carbon Literacy training across the community.

The award is initiated from The Carbon Literacy Project’s annual event, the Carbon Literacy Action Day (CLAD), which is the first and largest mass climate action training event of its kind. It offers an opportunity for learners from all walks of life, sectors, genders, ages and nations around the world to participate in and simultaneously complete their days’ worth of Carbon Literacy training, before going on to become certified as Carbon Literate.

The fourth annual mass climate action training day took place on Thursday 14th November 2024, to coincide with COP29. And so, while world leaders gathered on this day to discuss and negotiate on climate in Baku, Azerbaijan, Carbon Literacy learners across the world took action.

The Carbon Literacy Project introduced the CLAD Catalyst Award in hopes of driving further, faster action on climate change among those involved in the Action Day, and to champion three exceptional organisations in recognition of their efforts to deliver a particularly impactful Action Day initiative which will catalyse wide-reaching and rapid action to cut carbon emissions.

This year’s theme of Climate Inclusion encouraged participants to make their Carbon Literacy Action Day training as inclusive as possible in recognition of the need for everyone, everywhere to be part of the solutions required for a just transition to net zero.

During the week surrounding Carbon Literacy Day, Groundwork supported the following groups with Carbon Literacy activities:

  • A group of girls from year 10 at Abraham Moss School in Manchester
  • People on our Medlock Valley and Green Job Pathfinder employment projects
  • A group of learners in HMP Forest Bank
  • Our Executive Team will be revisiting their pledges and discussing how they can inspire further change within Groundwork Greater Manchester

Groundwork Greater Manchester is delighted to be named as a CLAD Catalyst Award winner.  We are proud of our efforts to embed climate awareness within our programmes and of our reach into diverse audiences who are often excluded from traditional learning approaches.  Carbon literacy is one of the key tools we use in our climate awareness pathway, and over time we have been able to experiment and develop our approach, in partnership with the Carbon Literacy trust, to find effective ways of engaging more marginalised groups.  Thank you to all our partners and participants who have helped make this possible.  We will continue experimenting, learning and developing so that we can make these vital conversations accessible to all.
