Energising Communities

Energising Communities is an energy efficiency programme that delivers energy saving advice and support to the most vulnerable households experiencing tackle fuel poverty.

Groundwork Green Doctors are independent energy efficiency experts who, throughout the duration of this project, will support 2,800 households with tailored home-based advice on energy use, behaviour change, switching energy suppliers, benefits & debt support as well as fitting small energy saving measures. Participating households will receive a detailed consultation from a Green Doctor (delivered remotely or in person, dependent on an assessment of risk, need, and Covid-19 restrictions), which will combine energy saving advice, referrals to other local support services (e.g. debt advice, food banks), and the installation of small energy saving measures.

Green Doctors will also deliver energy awareness training to 150 community-based groups using a ‘train the trainer’ model to help support even more households and help to create a legacy for years to come. Findings and evidence drawn from the programme will also contribute towards future projects to help influence future funding models.

Energising Communities will work in four regions, led by local Groundwork delivery staff in:

  • Greater Manchester – Burnley, Rochdale
  • North East – Gateshead, Sunderland
  • West Midlands – Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire Moorlands, Stoke on Trent
  • Yorkshire – Barnsley, Kirklees

The programme is funded by the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme.
