Groundwork London and Islington Council have teamed up to introduce Islington Greener Together Champions (IGTC). This initiative aims to empower individuals to promote sustainability in their area and drive positive change for our environment. At Groundwork London we are passionate about creating a future where every neighbourhood is vibrant and green and every community is strong.

The Islington Greener Together Champions programme is a voluntary programme for individuals who are passionate about greening their area. Groundwork London will be providing bespoke training, support and resources to empower residents to maintain their local greenspaces. These could be anything from parklets and pocket parks to rainwater gardens.

To be a Champion you might be a resident, a local greenspace user or admirer. You may have a little or lots of time to volunteer; you may already be involved with your local greenspace or want to be. Perhaps you are ambitious to help others, share your knowledge and skills and green more spaces in Islington.

Join our first champion’s event, the ‘Green Lung Walk’, where you can explore local greenspaces on a guided walk, connect with likeminded individuals and hear success stories from existing champions. Registration for the event and application to become a champion is easy, via our website and Eventbrite, you will find all the information you need!

Sheri Osei, Islington Greener Together Applicant said:

“I am excited to have the opportunity to have an Islington Greener Together site that will bring our community together. Having the chance to work with Groundwork London and Islington Council has enabled some of the visions I have had for a small area on my estate to come true and for that I feel very grateful. I am very passionate about green spaces and the Champions programme is needed so that people like me can develop their green skills and knowledge and gain valuable insight to continue to green the borough of Islington.”

Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality, and Transport, said:

“Islington’s precious green spaces have always benefitted from the work of local people, whose involvement help turn them into valued community spaces.  As part of our commitment to make the borough greener and healthier, and to tackle the impact of climate change, we are improving our existing green spaces, establishing new ones and planting more trees. And we are asking local people to help us.  It doesn’t matter whether you are an experienced gardener, or a greening newbie, whether you have a lot or a little time to spare.”

“There are many ways that Islington residents can get involved with greening but IGTC provides a great opportunity to learn new skills, while helping us create new green spaces for the local community, whether this is a parklet or planter in your street or other areas of green space in your local area.”
