Case Study: Young River Leaders - Connecting Young People in Manchester with the River Irk
Creating a new generation of river stewards in Manchester who can help local communities feel closer to water courses, including the River Irk, and see them as natural assets.
In 2019 the Young River Leaders programme engaged young people in Manchester with creative and meaningful activities to help them feel better connected to the River Irk and inspired to make positive changes to their environment.
Environmental Youth Social Action
As part of this programme young people in West Gorton, Manchester had the opportunity to learn the concepts of leadership, conservation and river management in a fun and exciting manner.
Accessed through our youth club provision and delivered by our experienced youth workers, young people from West Gorton, many of whom are from families dealing with multiple challenges, were offered the chance to participate in this outdoor learning programme.
Their new skills enabled them to take a lead role in the management and conservation of local river assets, including the River Irk.
The Young River Leaders supported 30 young people local to the River Irk to achieve 90 AQAs, covering modules from peer leadership to invasive species.
