Ellie, an 18-year-old from Cheadle, Stockport, initially achieved strong GCSE results. However, she experienced difficulties transitioning into college. She found the environment unsuitable for her needs and became increasingly uncertain about her future goals and career direction. After missing the first few weeks of her course, Ellie began to fall behind academically, which reinforced her decision that college was not the right setting for her at that time.

Ellie faced a loss of confidence and uncertainty about her next steps. She was concerned about falling behind her peers both academically and professionally, and lacked clarity around her career aspirations.

Intervention

To regain direction and confidence, Ellie began engaging with Groundwork through the SK Horizons programme. She expressed a desire to work towards qualifications at her own pace while building her self-confidence. Groundwork adopted a person-centred approach, allowing Ellie to guide the pace and focus of her sessions.

Through weekly one-to-one support with her mentor, Ella, Ellie explored her interests and career goals. During this time, she worked towards and successfully completed several qualifications, including:

  • Customer Service Level 2
  • Health & Safety Level 1
  • Health & Safety Level 2

Ellie demonstrated strong commitment and consistency, achieving all qualifications within a few weeks.

Outcome

As a result of her engagement, Ellie’s confidence improved significantly. She became more proactive in applying for jobs and successfully secured a position at a local bar. This role has enabled her to build on her newly acquired skills while providing stability and time to continue pursuing apprenticeships and long-term career opportunities.

Impact

Ellie reports a marked improvement in her self-confidence and outlook on her future. Reflecting on her experience, she shared:

“Before Groundwork I was really embarrassed about not having any plans or ideas on what I wanted to do for a career. However, since working with Ella and Deborah I feel so much better about it. They reminded me that I am only young and that I am not the only one struggling. I learnt so much, not only about the courses but also about life and different perspectives. I definitely feel more confident in myself and more equipped to finally start work. I have really enjoyed working with Groundwork, and I have had a great opportunity to work with amazing women.”

Ellie’s journey highlights the importance of flexible, person-centred support in helping young people rebuild confidence, gain qualifications, and take meaningful steps towards employment.
