Frances is a homeowner living in a one-bedroom maisonette. In her early forties, she lives with several long-term health conditions, including spinal and mobility-related issues, and receives Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Frances initially sought support to make her home more energy efficient and to find ways to reduce or better manage her energy bills during a challenging period of rising living costs.

Alan explaining how a boiler works

Energy Advisor Alan visited Frances at home and identified several opportunities to improve the efficiency of her heating system. He reduced the boiler flow temperature for heating from 85°C to 60°C and lowered the hot water temperature setting. He also provided advice on using the room thermostat more effectively, explaining that reducing the target temperature from 25°C to between 18°C and 21°C could help lower energy consumption while maintaining a comfortable home environment. Frances was also signposted for a heating system check to ensure her system was operating efficiently.

To further improve the home’s energy efficiency, Alan installed radiator reflector panels, fitted draught excluders to internal doors, and added draught-proofing seals around door frames to help reduce heat loss.

At a follow-up visit, Frances reported that the measures had made a noticeable difference. Her home felt warmer and retained heat more effectively, while her energy bills had reduced by up to £10 per month.

Recognising the additional challenges Frances faced due to her health conditions, Alan also referred her for support through the Cadent Winter Support Fund. As a result, she received a Heat the Person bundle and a supermarket food voucher. He also made a referral through the Let’s Talk/Charis scheme for a replacement fridge freezer.
