In 2023 Groundwork took the legal responsibility for 11.89 hectares of private land near Hollingworth Lake in Rochdale. Over the next 10-years we’ll be managing the land to establish a diverse and rich woodland which will:

  • Increase biodiversity and habitat diversity
  • Improve water quality and reduce runoff to neighbouring watercourses by improving soil quality
  • Improve air quality and sequester carbon, and providing a cooling effect through planting
  • Enhance the landscape visually for residents & people using the adjacent public access routes
After the planting of 8,000 native trees

Getting started

In the winter months of 2023/24, our landscaping team planted 8,800 native trees on the land. These included a variety of species including; Oak, Birch, Aspen, Holly, Rowan, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Hazel, Juniper, Guelder Rose and Horse Chestnut.

These were planted in low-density structure and sympathetic way, leaving open areas between trees so that a wider variety of habitats can be created.

Ongoing woodland management and maintenance

Regular management is essential to establish a new woodland, with young trees at risk from a range of environmental pressures.

Our team regular monitor the site to ensure that the trees are growing well and provide an opportunity to identify and respond quickly to any issues. Where necessary, damaged tree guards have been repaired or replaced, helping to protect young trees as they establish.

Community engagement

Although the woodland is on private land, with permission from the landowner, we have been able to use the site as an education resource. Young people from our youth clubs travelled from Manchester to see the woodland developing. After learning more about nature’s challenges and how woodlands help, they took part in some practical maintenance tasks.

I’ve learnt that I like nature, even if it’s talking about badger poo, I feel I’ve learnt something new
