When James first heard about the Retrofit Awareness course through his local job centre, he was exploring potential career paths within the construction industry.

“I found out about the course when I first went in to sign on. They mentioned the course and were really encouraging people to take part. It sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a go.”

At the time, James was considering a future in carpentry or joinery and saw the course as an opportunity to learn more about the wider construction sector.

“I figured the course might give me some insight into the building industry and help me understand how everything fits together.”

Seeing Retrofit in Action

One of the highlights of the programme for James was an early site visit to a retrofitted home in Chorlton, where participants were able to see energy efficiency measures being used in a real-life setting.

“We saw the heat pumps, insulation and everything that can be done to improve a home. It was really good to see the best standards and how things should be done in practice.”

The visit helped bring the classroom learning to life and gave James a practical understanding of retrofit technologies and their role in improving homes.

“I knew about things like insulation and solar panels before, but I didn’t really understand how it all fitted together. Now I can see the bigger picture.”

Building Knowledge for Future Careers

Although James remains focused on pursuing a career in carpentry and is due to begin a carpentry course later this year, he believes the Retrofit Awareness course has given him valuable knowledge that will benefit him throughout his career.

“It’s not put me off construction at all. If anything, it’s given me a better understanding of the industry, especially around health and safety.”

Having previously worked in a primary school, James was already familiar with health and safety procedures, but the course helped him understand how these requirements differ within construction environments.

“I’ve learned quite a bit about the differences between health and safety in schools and on construction sites. It’s been really useful.”

He also recognises the growing importance of retrofit and sustainable construction practices within the industry.

“If this is the direction the government wants construction to go in, then it’s good to have that insight. There’s every chance I’ll end up working on building sites during my carpentry career, so it’s useful knowledge to have.”

A Supportive Learning Environment

Alongside the technical knowledge gained, James appreciated the positive atmosphere of the course and the opportunity to learn alongside other participants.

“It’s been nice. I’ve got on well with the other lads on the course and it’s been well delivered.”

He was particularly complimentary about the support provided by the course tutors.

“Kelly and Karin did a good job. They’re both really supportive and encouraging.”

Would James Recommend the Course?

James says he would recommend the Retrofit Awareness course to others who are considering a career in construction.

“I’ve learned a fair amount and it’s given me a much better understanding of retrofit and where the industry is heading.”

For James, the course has provided a valuable introduction to retrofit, sustainable construction and modern building practices, knowledge that will support his next steps into a career in carpentry and the wider construction sector.
