Jane is a 56-year-old resident of Stockport who was referred to Groundwork’s Support to Succeed programme by the Department for Work and Pensions. She attended her first session on 30th June 2025, taking an important step toward exploring employment opportunities for the first time.

Background

When Jane joined the programme, she described herself as an open book, willing to share her experiences, but understandably apprehensive about entering employment. She had previously taken part in other employment programmes that had not led to paid work, which left her feeling discouraged.
Living with health conditions and learning difficulties had significantly impacted her confidence and self-esteem. Jill had never worked before, and the people around her often doubted that she ever would because of her learning difficulties. Over time, this affected her belief in her own capabilities.

Engagement and Development

From the beginning, Jane embraced the Support to Succeed sessions. She participated in a range of clubs and group activities, including Arts and Puzzle Workshops, enjoying the opportunity to connect with others in a welcoming and supportive environment. Through these sessions, she began developing new skills and gradually building her confidence.
As her trust in staff grew, Jane took a significant step forward by asking to meet with Employment Coach Eddie to explore her career options more formally.

Career Planning and Support

During one-to-one sessions, Jane and Eddie reviewed her existing strengths, interests, and the types of roles available locally. Through these discussions, Jane decided she would like to pursue a role as a School Crossing Patrol Officer (commonly known as a Lollipop Lady). The role appealed to her desire to contribute positively to her community while working in a structured and meaningful position.
Eddie provided tailored support throughout her journey, including:

  • Assisting her to complete her job application
  • Running mock interview sessions to build her confidence
  • Supporting her through the DBS application process

The mock interviews were particularly valuable, helping Jane feel more prepared and capable ahead of her formal interview.

Outcome

On 31st July 2025, just one month after starting the programme, Jane secured her very first paid employment role. She began working 20 hours per month as a School Crossing Patrol Officer in Stockport, delivering a vital service to children and families in her local community.
This achievement marked a significant milestone in Jane’s life, not only gaining employment, but challenging long-held beliefs about her own abilities.

Since starting work, Jane has expressed immense pride in her achievement. Employment has strengthened her confidence, independence, and sense of purpose.
Jane was very grateful for Eddie’s support on her career journey, saying:
“Thank you so much for all the help!”

Jane’s journey demonstrates the power of personalised, confidence-building support. With the right encouragement and practical guidance, barriers such as health conditions, learning difficulties, and low self-esteem can be overcome.
