“The programme has helped me realise I am worth so much more than people tell me” – Minaal’s story
Background
Minaal Asjid’s educational journey was significantly disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. While she was in high school during the national lockdowns, she struggled with learning in large group settings and found it difficult to adapt to the sudden changes. Despite these challenges, Minaal remained passionate about her personal development and was determined to find a path that worked for her.
Following high school, Minaal enrolled in college. However, she left after just one week. The large class sizes and the transition back to in-person learning after prolonged online education proved overwhelming. Still eager to progress, Minaal then began an apprenticeship in childcare. Unfortunately, she felt the apprenticeship lacked adequate support and meaningful learning opportunities. These repeated setbacks left Minaal feeling disheartened, believing that nothing available was truly suited to her needs. She began to feel as though she was failing at every opportunity she tried to take.
The Turning Point: Joining the King’s Trust Team Programme
Minaal was introduced to the King’s Trust TEAM Programme through Tameside Council. Although hesitant at first, given her previous experiences, she took a brave step forward and contacted Lauren, the Team Leader.
Following a positive initial meeting, Minaal made the decision to leave her apprenticeship and commit to the 12-week TEAM Programme. She felt that this programme might finally provide the support she had been seeking.

“When I joined the King’s Trust Programme, I felt as if I had been given a chance to start a new journey in self-development… I was motivated to enrol when I found out I would gain five qualifications and support with building a CV and finding employment in my area of interest.”
The Journey
Minaal’s time on the programme was transformative. In just a few weeks, she began to build confidence and overcome personal barriers, most notably during the residential activity week in Week 2.
Despite significant anxiety around physical challenges and tight spaces, Minaal took part in activities such as caving, rock climbing, and abseiling, experiences she would have previously avoided. With Lauren’s consistent encouragement and understanding, Minaal exceeded her own expectations.
“I managed to climb up the rock wall despite my fear of heights, and I even went inside the cave, something I never thought I could do.”
Another major step for Minaal was tackling her fear of public transport. Previously avoiding buses due to anxiety, she began using them regularly with Lauren’s support, gradually building the independence to travel to destinations like Oldham, Rochdale, and Ashton on her own.
“The programme has given me so many opportunities and helped me realise I am worth so much more than people tell me. I’ve learned never to doubt myself and to be proud when I achieve something.”

Next Steps
With a newfound sense of confidence and direction, Minaal is now preparing to complete her GCSE/Functional Skills in Maths. She has also successfully gained voluntary employment with the NHS as a Volunteer Patient & Carer Feedback Support Officer, supporting the administration team. She hopes to support children and young people through their own developmental journeys, just as she has been supported.
The King’s Trust TEAM programme has also equipped her with practical life skills, such as independently using public transport and confidently making phone calls to seek out opportunities, skills she once found daunting.
“I wish the programme was longer. Every day was fun, there was never a dull moment. I’d do it all again if I could, I don’t regret a single moment.”
