Understanding and enhancing biodiversity with the NHS
In 2022 Groundwork were commissioned by Urban Design & Consult on behalf of NHS Property Services to produce proposals for improving biodiversity in the grounds of 36 Health Centres/GP surgeries located across Greater Manchester & Cheshire.
The NHS were keen to hear suggestions from our Landscape Designers on how the sites could be enhanced for nature and biodiversity.
Site surveys were undertaken to assess the existing landscape and opportunities for improvements.
Following the completion of our Landscape Designers proposals, our Landscaping Team were contracted to implement the proposals at five NHS sites across Greater Manchester.
The team installed a number of biodiversity enhancing features, including:
- Wildflower turf
- Fruit trees
- Bug hotels
- Bird boxes
- Raised planters
- Tree benches
Signage was also added at each site to inform staff and patients about the added features and how small greenspaces like these are vital stepping stones for nature in the urban environment.
