What is Carbon Literacy?

Carbon Literacy Logo

Carbon Literacy is a one day training course certified by the Carbon Literacy Trust designed to:

“Raise awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

At Groundwork, we deliver a range of Carbon Literacy training courses to different groups, including people on our employment programmes, the communities we work with, and our VCSFE partners.

Carbon Literacy for the VCSFE sector

Our aim is to support the VCFSE sector to build climate awareness and take meaningful action. We recognise that communities who have contributed least to climate change are often those most affected by its impacts.

Through our Carbon Literacy training, we equip the sector with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to understand, discuss, and address climate change in ways that centre fairness, strengthen community resilience, and highlight the collective benefits of taking action together.

This one-day training builds the confidence of VCFSE workers to integrate climate considerations into their day-to-day conversations and activities, ensuring the sector is actively championing an issue that affects us all.

This training also helps organisations strengthen their own internal practices, enabling them to identify opportunities to reduce their environmental impact, embed sustainability into policies and operations, and lead by example within the sector. By building internal capacity, organisations will be better equipped to make informed decisions and drive meaningful change across their teams and services.

Our courses can be delivered in person or online for approximately £100 per delegate, plus certification costs. If you are interested in working with us, please complete the form at the bottom of this page.

Why work with Groundwork?

Groundwork Greater Manchester is a Platinum-level Carbon Literate Organisation, committed to environmental action across both our programmes and our day-to-day operations.

We have over eight years’ experience delivering Carbon Literacy training and a dedicated team of trainers, all qualified to Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET). This ensures our training is consistently high-quality, engaging, and impactful.

I thought the training was excellently delivered, very informative and quite eye opening, whilst reconfirming the actions that I am taking already, but making me think about further actions.

Community Climate Workshops

In addition to Carbon Literacy, we also deliver Climate Conversations Workshops which are designed to inform communities about the process, key drivers and impacts of climate change; with a particular focus on climate justice and action.

Facilitated by our Climate Lead these informal workshops explore individual and collective action, as well as local and global action. Emphasis is placed on the fact that climate action is only impactful, meaningful and sustainable if it is fair and proportionate to the people taking it.
