The Our Space Award Successfully Grants 27 New Projects with Funding to Improve London’s Shared Green Spaces

(Tideway and Groundwork London / The Our Space Award / London)

Groundwork London is thrilled to announce that the most recent Our Space Award (OSA) grants programme, launched in November 2021, has seen its most successful release yet. The application window for submission closed on the 15th of December 2021. Following the final panel meeting held on Monday 17th January 2022, a total of £159,041.19 was awarded in funding to 27 unique and exciting projects located across London. This is a remarkable comparison to the last round of OSA in 2019, awarding 21 projects a total of £102,471 from shared funding. The programme was put on hold in 2020 due to the global Covid19 pandemic.

OSA aims to help Londoners clean and green the city through active community engagement and participation, increasing a sense of community ownership over shared spaces. Successful applicants will have been announced, and projects winning grants of up to £20,000 will soon commence; projects will each have their part to play in improving neighbourhoods and shared green spaces through different activities, such as; –

  • Tree planting
  • Climate resilience and adaptations to climate change;
  • Improvements to water quality and drainage through planting and reducing hard surfaces;
  • Ecological and biodiversity benefits;
  • Climate education alongside physical improvements;
  • Improving air quality;
  • Reducing health inequalities and social isolation.

OSA is funded by a number of valuable funders with a vested interest in the programme benefits for London’s shared spaces and their communities. Tideway, the company building London’s ‘super sewer’, is the programme’s latest investor. With particular interest in supporting projects which have some link with water or an element of environmental education, their expertise is sure to add value  to many of the successful applicants over the course of the year. Projects are estimated to complete before 13 February 2023.

Grants will be administered and delivered by Groundwork London, a charity working to create strong and sustainable communities across the capital. The grant programme was further promoted this year by ActionFunder and their innovative online system which which matches funders with like-minded community groups and charities so they can make a real difference together. This helped to channel a diverse range of groups to come forward with varying project themes.

Kelly Bradley, Community Investment Manager from Tideway, had this to say about the recent success of the programme;

“As an environmental project ourselves, we are delighted that these 27 grants will help communities across London to green their neighbourhoods, tackling the effects of climate change and educating people about how they can help protect their environment. It also fits so well with our aim to deliver a wider legacy through our community investment programme. Helping to select the awards has been inspiring and I am excited to see how these projects will bring communities closer whilst making green improvements to their space.”

Martin Petry, Manager of Grants Programmes at Groundwork London, shared his thoughts on the results of the latest round of the grant release on behalf of the federation;

“We are thrilled to be delivering Our Space Award again after a brief pause. We are excited to be working with an expanded group of funders on a larger programme which is now provided larger grants from £500 up to £20,000. These new developments will allow us to provide even more support to London’s communities to improve their shared spaces and increase their sense of ownership.”

As projects progress across London, Tideway and Groundwork London will continue to support groups with their delivery, including volunteer support and providing advice and expertise. We look forward to seeing the impact on the ground and getting to know the people behind the projects. Meanwhile, work is set to begin shortly to pull together the launch for OSA’s next release within the next twelve months.

The Our Space Award (OSA) aims to help Londoners clean and green the city through active community engagement and participation, increasing a sense of community ownership over shared spaces. Projects awarded with a grant from OSA support Londoners of all ages and backgrounds, communities and schools in greening their neighbourhoods, making them inclusive places for all to enjoy.

Groundwork London works with communities across the capital to transform their lives and the places they live. We have been at the forefront of social and environmental regeneration in London for over 25 years, and today we have a simple mission: to create better places, improve people’s prospects, and promote greener living and working.
