Groundwork Greater Manchester have been working with United Utilities to improve water efficiency across the region through a targeted water-saving initiative.

Since phase 2 of the programme was launched in July 2024, Groundwork has visited over 40 schools and businesses across the city region, resulting in substantial water savings.

To date, the initiative has achieved a total water saving of 58,276 litres per day, with each visit averaging a reduction of 1,575 litres per day.

A significant portion of these savings comes from addressing common issues such as leaks. Notably, 16,741 litres of water savings per day were achieved by fixing toilet leaks, while 19,841 litres per day were saved by repairing sink leaks. This proactive approach not only conserves water but also helps reduce operational costs for the schools and businesses involved.

Groundwork have also been working with the Environment Agency and number of partners on Dispelling the Myth; a project designed to ignite conversations about water resources in the North West. Despite the North West being a region with a reputation for plentiful rainfall, pressure on our water resources and water environment is increasing too due to the impacts of climate change and population and economic growth.

This programme is a prime example of how practical interventions can lead to meaningful environmental outcomes.
