Groundwork Employment Specialist Kirsty first met Diana and Oscar in January 2025. Elevate Salford partner Salford Loaves and Fishes signposted them to Groundwork due to our experience providing training and support to people who wanted a career in the construction sector.

Just three weeks earlier, Diana and Oscar had arrived in the UK from Columbia with their two children with a newly granted refugee status. The family faced challenges familiar to many refugees, including moves between hotels, however despite these uncertainties both Diana and Oscar were determined from the outset to start work as soon as possible and were grateful that Groundwork could help.

Their shared goal was to gain their CSCS cards, with Oscar seeking to build on his experience as a welder in Columbia, whilst Diana was keen to explore opportunities as a cleaner on building sites.

Diana and Oscar faced some challenges with the English language so to support their learning, Kirsty arranged Spanish-translated revision materials and booklets. This enhanced their understanding of the content and enabled them to progress more quickly. Both Diana and Oscar each dedicated significant time to studying and came prepared to training sessions with questions, clearly showing their strong desire to learn and succeed.

In April 2025, Diana and Oscar proudly passed their assessment and gained their CSCS qualifications and so work began on applying for jobs.

Diana and Oscar

Kirsty ran mock-interview situations with them both, helping build their confidence with standard interview question and practice their English speaking.

In May, Diana applied for her first job in the UK; an administrative role with AQA. The interview went well, and she successfully secured a position starting at the end of June.

Just a month later Oscar successfully applied for and secured a welding position with CoolFreeze.

Diana shared:

Massive thanks for your supportive words Kirsty, they are very important for me, and thanks for offering your help – it’s been a big difference in our life.
