In an inspiring story of personal transformation, Paula Godfrey has emerged as a shining example of how volunteering can open doors and change lives, particularly for those facing the challenges of disability.

Paula ‘s journey began in the winter of 2023 when she first stepped into Groundwork’s Welcome Space as a visitor. Living with multiple disabilities that had historically limited her employment opportunities and affected her confidence, she found herself drawn to the supportive atmosphere of the community centre.

“Having a disability can be challenging,” Paula reflects, “but this experience has shown me that I can be useful and can contribute positively.” This realisation came after she made the pivotal decision to transition from visitor to volunteer in March 2024, taking on an administrative and advice support role in our Groundwork Learning Centre.

In her volunteer position, Paula ‘s responsibilities ranged from supporting Learning Centre attendees with art supplies to handling crucial administrative tasks such as data entry and enrolment. The role proved to be transformative. “Since beginning this role, my confidence and self-esteem have improved,” she says. “When I leave at the end of the day, I feel like I have made a difference, and I look forward to coming back.”

Her dedication and growth didn’t go unnoticed. By summer 2024, Paula secured her first paid position with Groundwork Yorkshire as a sessional worker in their Communities Team’s Healthy Holiday Scheme. Though the role was fixed-term, lasting four weeks, it represented a significant milestone in her professional journey.

Today, Paula continues to give back to the community that helped her flourish, serving as the Welcome Space volunteer this winter. Her duties include greeting visitors, offering support with various issues, and ensuring everyone has access to refreshments and food.

“Volunteering has been a lifeline for me,” Paula emphasises. “I no longer feel like my disabilities hold me back. I am learning that there are things I can do, and that makes me feel really good. My mental and physical health has improved thanks to Groundwork Yorkshire giving me the opportunity.”

Her message to others considering volunteering is clear and compelling: “Volunteering has opened up so many opportunities for me, and I have gained so much experience that I hope will eventually lead to a permanent role. It’s a great way to re-enter the world of work, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.”

Paula ‘s story serves as a powerful reminder that with the right support and opportunities, individuals can overcome barriers and make meaningful contributions to their communities, regardless of the challenges they face.
