Working with young people

We work with young people to support them to become active members of their community. We engage with schools and youth groups, and have a youth volunteering programme where young people participate in environmental projects, antisocial behaviour reduction initiatives, and the healthy holiday programme. A new development for the coming year is our role as mentors in the New to Nature programme. The programme offers paid 12 months works experience to young people looking to work in the environmental sector. Groundwork Yorkshire are due to support ten young people across three cohorts. We are delivering a Supported Internship programme in North Yorkshire for young people who have an Education Health Care Plan, enabling them to have in depth work experience as well as gaining a range of qualifications including Maths, English and employability. Utilising a number of funding streams we are delivering an alternative curriculum programme to targeted young people in Year 9 across secondary schools in North Yorkshire offering schools a 6 week, 1 day a week, programme leading to a Level 1 Horticulture Certificate. This programme positively impacts on young people’s behaviour, attendance, attainment and mental health.

Green Skills

We will continue to deliver Community Adult Learning funded by Leeds City Council from the Groundwork Learning Centre based in our Morley building, as well as developing the the range of courses we run in partnership with other third sector providers in the city. We are also going to be running some Family Learning courses in 2024. Having developed a range of online learning courses during the pandemic, we aim to develop these alongside our funded classroom based courses. We are delivering a range of non-accredited learning in courses such as textiles, arts, woodworking, photography, business administration, digital skills as well as every-day Maths and English. We continue to look at developing green skills for adult learners as Groundwork continues to be well placed to deliver these. We are planning on delivering an employment support hub in 2024.
