Travel back in time to Anglo-Saxon Britain at Jarrow Hall – Anglo-Saxon Farm, Village and Bede Museum, a historic and environmental oasis in the heart of South Tyneside. We’re an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, which means funding thanks to taxpayers plays a huge part in supporting our work.
Volunteer with Jarrow Hall
We have opportunities to Volunteer at Jarrow Hall Anglo-Saxon Farm, Village and Bede Museum, thanks to support from Know Your Neighbourhood fund.
Following a competitive process, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) confirmed in January that £14 million of the total £19 million government funding would be delivered by UK Community Foundations (UKCF) and a consortium of local community foundations across 9 local authority areas.
Thanks to the fund, Jarrow Hall Anglo-Saxon Farm, Village and Bede Museum, has launched a programme of volunteering opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved with. Volunteer roles include animal care assistant, visitor experience guides and roles maintaining the museum’s Anglo-Saxon farm and village.

Bede Museum
Jarrow Hall Museum houses a unique exhibition that details the life and times of the Venerable Bede, an important historical figure regarded as the ‘father of English history’. The museum is home to a collection of Anglo-Saxon artefacts discovered in and around the grounds of Jarrow Hall.

Exhibition Space
Jarrow Hall Museum also provides temporary exhibition space for individuals and groups of artists to display their work. Artisans may also wish to sell their work in the Museum Gift Shop that offers a range of locally crafted items.

Heritage Skills Workshops
With support from The National Heritage Fund, we deliver a series of Heritage Skills Workshops where participants learn traditional crafts such as metallurgy, basket weaving, calligraphy and thatching. Skills can be put to use in maintaining the authenticity of the dwellings in our Anglo-Saxon Farm and Village.

Education for Schools & Universities
Jarrow Hall has been a place for education and learning since Dame Rosemary Cramp DBE, FSA, FBA and her team made significant Anglo-Saxon archaeological discoveries on site in 1963. Since then, we have worked closely with universities to explore new archaeological practices and to educate school groups on local history and heritage.

Museum Entry Prices
A Jarrow Hall ticket will you grant entry to the museum throughout the year and costs only £8.00 per adult, concessions only £5.00. Free entry is available to children under 4 years of age, Carers and Max card holder’s; other discounted rates apply.
