CASE STUDY: Big Local Central Jarrow

For the last 10 years we’ve been working with some amazing and inspirational people to make life in Central Jarrow better for all.

Big Local is an exciting opportunity for residents in 150 areas around England to use at least £1m to make a massive and lasting positive difference to their communities. It’s about bringing together all the local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their area an even better place to live.

Big Local is being run by Local Trust which is an independent organisation working with £200m from the Big Lottery Fund and a range of partners providing expert advice and support to the local community.

Big Local Central Jarrow is part of Phase 2 of the Big Local initiative announced on the 29th February 2012.

The first Interim Steering Group meeting was held on the 4th July 2012 as a result of work undertaken by the Big Local representative.   The Partnership Board produced their terms of reference and set out on the journey of getting people involved, exploring the Big Local vision for Central Jarrow and forming the Big Local Partnership for Central Jarrow.

The Partnership prepared a profile of the Central Jarrow Area, and submitted a Plan based on the consultation work to Local Trust for approval. The plan was accepted and the programme has been running since March 2014. Two projects that were originally tendered continue to benefit the residents of Central Jarrow these are:

  • Landscape and Gardening Project (being delivered by Groundwork STANT)
  • Young People’s Detached Project (being delivered by YMCA North Tyneside)

The Big Local Central Jarrow Landscape and Gardening Project, which started in 2014, aims to improve green spaces in central Jarrow, as well as provide an opportunity for residents to get hands-on experience of horticulture and gardening skills whilst making new friends, learning new skills and improving local areas.

Activities include weeding, making raised beds, planting and working across different sites to improve the local area. The sessions are friendly, informal and are designed to cater for all abilities and individual needs. All sessions begin with a warmup and tool/equipment instruction guide, this is followed by the main activity session and then a gradual cool down.

The programme initiative is funded by Big Local Central Jarrow, a community partnership which is funded by Local Trust, with the aim of improving the central Jarrow area in Tyne and Wear.

Through the funding received by Big Local, Groundwork South and North Tyneside employs two apprentices a year to support the project. The apprentices work alongside the landscaping and gardening volunteers and have the opportunity to undergo formal training, as well as to work with other Groundwork South and North Tyneside teams to gain valuable transferable skills.

The Big Local Central Jarrow Landscape and Gardening Project has also included working with organisations in both the public and private sector, as well as local businesses, and voluntary and community organisations to develop a high profile ‘gateway’ scheme for the Big Local Central Jarrow area. Working alongside the Big Local Central Jarrow board, the project team have installed three gateway features in the central Jarrow area. The gateway features were designed by local artists and chosen by the public. The sites are maintained by the volunteers.

The Big Local Central Jarrow Landscape and Gardening Project has had a positive impact on the local community and the residents of Jarrow, as many of the green spaces that residents walk past and enjoy have been created and maintained by the project staff and the volunteers.
